This itinerary takes you to the three of the most popular islands in the archipelago. Santiago with its lush landscapes, craggy mountains and deep valleys, Sao Vicente offering a cultural experience filled with music and finally Sal, home to some dazzling white sand beaches with crystal clear waters.
This is a two week itinerary.
While in Santiago we stay in Praia, where you have plenty of time to explore this city, built on a plateau of rock and overspilling onto the lands below its steep cliffs. The main square on the Plateau houses some noteworthy buildings including the old Palace of the Council, the Presidential Palace and the old Catholic Cathedral. A statue of Diogo Gomes, one of the two discoverers of Santiago, stands just outside the square. Or you may wish to explore the large African markets. The Cidade Velha was the old capital of Santiago until 1770. Today, the villagers live amongst the ruins of the numerous churches with the great hill fort behind them. Excursions here are available and will take you to the through the dramatic mountainous scenery in the interior of the island.
On São Vicente, Mindelo is a vibrant and exciting city that is generally considered to be the cultural capital of the Islands and is rightly proud of its rich traditions in art and music. The cobbled squares, wide streets and 19th century European architecture is reminiscent of colonial times past. The neighbouring island of Santo Antão is easily accessible by ferry and is a popular island and boasts beautiful mountainous scenery, a popular choice for hikers.
The last week of your trip can be spent relaxing on the stunning beaches of Sal with its warm turquoise waters. Sal offers an array of watersports.
Discover the markets, vibrant nightlife and live music as well as the moutainous scenery of Santiago and Sao Vicente before relaxing on the beach for a week in Sal. However before leaving Sao Vicente take advantage of the short ferry crossing over to the island of Santo Antao. With its rugged peaks, volcanic walls and jaw dropping ravines it is one of the most inpressive islands in the archipelago and well worth seeing.
