Being responsible in the office is equally as important as in our destinations to ensure we minimise our impact on the environment.
The most effective way of implementing Responsible Tourism is by committing to follow all the main points of our policy to make a lasting and positive effect on the environment. Please read this policy carefully.
Reducing Waste
- Try and avoid printing every document - try electronically filing
- Print double sided
- Email rather then sending letters where possible. This is not always appropriate but it is quicker and saves paper
- Use the larger printers - they are more cost efficient
- As a department, look at how much waste you generate and how you can cut down on this. E.g. Re-use scrap paper in one of your printer trays for internal use only.
Recycle
We already recycle a fair amount of paper in the office but we need to do more. Think of all the ugly land filled sites we're filling!
Here is a list of what we recycle:
- Toner cartridges
- Paper, newspapers, magazines, envelopes
- Stamps - Collect in departments and give to admin
- Milk bottles, plastic bottles and other plastic packaging
- Cardboard
- Food & drinks cans
- Opt in & Offset
To reduce our carbon footprint we will offset all the carbon emissions from any staff air travel to the Cape Verde Islands.
Saving Energy
Lights - Turn all lights off at night. Consider whether you need the light on or not?
Hot Water - Our hot water dispensers are a lot more efficient than kettles
Air conditioning - This is often necessary but uses a vast amount of energy. So in order for it to work as efficiently as possibly, please keep all windows and doors closed otherwise you are wasting energy. Temperature must be set at 23 degrees.
Turn AC system off at the end of the day.
PC'S & Mac's - Switch off at the end of the day. This saves electricity and reduces the risk of fire.
Fairtrade
We now use fairtrade hot chocolate and sugar as this supports vulnerable farmers.
Car Sharing
Sharing a lift to work not only saves you money but more importantly protects the environment from further pollution.
Where possible, why not share a lift to Whitely at lunchtime with people in your department?
