Every year in March takes place the Surf World Cup on the island of Sal, offering spectators a unique show of thousands of surfers hitting the waves over a two-week period.

Cape Verde is also a good place to learn surfing, away from the huge waves; Surf Zone is one of the largest surf schools on Sal Island, located both in the Bay of Santa Maria and near the world famous wave spot Punta Preta.
